Where to Go for a Fall Color Weekend Near Aspen, Colorado
If you want a fall color weekend for two near Aspen, Beyul Retreat is 32 acres on the Frying Pan River in the Frying Pan River Valley, one hour from Aspen and 45 minutes from Basalt. You can book a single cabin or one lodge room for the weekend, which means you get aspen groves, a sauna, a spring-fed cold plunge and a hot tub without renting the whole property. In early October the aspens here are fully gold, and by mid to late October the leaves come down, the river runs low and clear, and the peaks often pick up a first dusting of snow.
When is peak fall color in the Frying Pan River Valley?
Late September and Early October is peak color. The groves go fully gold, some leaves start to drop, and on a clear day the whole valley looks lit from the inside. It moves fast, which is part of the appeal.
By mid to late October the canopy thins and the property gets quieter. Bare aspen trunks against a grey sky have their own thing going on, and morning frost can sit on the grass until ten. If you are choosing between the two halves of the month, it depends on whether you want the color or the calm. Both are worth the drive.
What does a fall weekend at Beyul look like for two people?
Slower than you think it will be, and warmer.
A weekend here tends to find its own rhythm. Coffee somewhere with a view of the river. A walk through the aspens while the frost is still on everything. The Forest Spiral, our walking meditation path, takes as long as you let it, and it is a good thing to do alone and then compare notes afterward.
The sauna, the spring-fed cold plunge and the hot tub are there for the afternoon. In October the air is already cold, so the contrast with the sauna is sharp. Ponds, trails and the riverbanks are all on property, so you can spend a full day without getting in the car.
Evenings gather around fire. There is the fire pit outside and the fireplace in the main lodge, and once the sun drops behind the ridge, one or the other is an easy place to end up. October evenings are long, and conversations tend to stretch to fit them.
Where should a couple stay, a cabin or a lodge room?
We have 13 cabins and 6 lodge rooms. You can book one of either as a couple.
There is no wifi in the cabins. For some guests that is the point of a cabin, and for others it is a dealbreaker on a work weekend. The main lodge has wifi, including in its 6 upstairs rooms, so if one of you needs to be reachable, a lodge room solves it. Lodge rooms also put you closer to the fireplace, which in late October is a real consideration.
What is the food situation?
For a stay in a cabin or a lodge room, you cook. Every cabin has a kitchenette or a full kitchen, and each cabin's setup is shown when you book. The lodge rooms and the Snug cabins share a communal kitchen in the main lodge. Plan a grocery stop on the way up the valley and you are set for the weekend.
The exception is our culinary weeks, which run in high season. On those weeks our chefs cook with organic, local, sustainable and seasonal ingredients and work with the best animal proteins available. Food allergies and preferences get accommodated, so tell us in advance and it is handled quietly rather than negotiated at the table.
What should you pack for October at 8,200 feet?
We sit at 8,200 feet, and temperatures can swing between a sunny afternoon and a clear night. Pack in layers you can shed and re-add all day.
The short list: a warm jacket, a hat, gloves you will probably use in the morning, boots with real tread for leaf-covered trails, and swimsuits for the sauna, hot tub and cold plunge. A second pair of socks is never a mistake. If you are coming late in the month, plan for frost and the possibility of snow on the peaks and maybe on the ground.
Bring a book. There is a mercantile on property for the things you forget, and a yoga studio if you want to move in the morning before the day warms up.
How do you get to Beyul from Aspen or Basalt?
We are one hour from Aspen and 45 minutes from Basalt, up the Frying Pan River Valley. It is a pretty drive in October.
Give yourself daylight for the first trip if you can. Arriving with enough light to walk the property before dinner sets up the rest of the stay.
