Can You Book a Mountain Retreat as a Solo Traveller?

Yes. At Beyul Retreat, 32 acres along the Frying Pan River in Colorado's Frying Pan River Valley, 45 minutes from Basalt and an hour from Aspen, you can book a single cabin or a single lodge room for yourself. You don't have to buy out the property or join a group.

That's the short answer. The longer one is about what a solo stay here actually involves in November, when the leaves are down, the river runs low and clear, and the valley has gone quiet.

Can you book just one room at Beyul?

You can. We have 13 cabins and 6 lodge rooms, and the property comfortably sleeps 60 to 70 people when it's full, though none of that obliges you to fill it. A solo guest books one room the way they would anywhere else, and no one will ask why you're alone.

The practical difference between the two options is connection, in both senses. There's no wifi in the cabins. There is wifi in the main lodge, the gathering spaces, and the 6 lodge rooms upstairs in the main lodge. If you want to be reachable, or you're working on something that needs the internet, a lodge room is the straightforward choice. If you'd rather be unreachable and walk to the lodge when you want a signal, take a cabin.

What does a solo day at Beyul look like in November?

Quieter than you might expect, and more structured than you might expect, because the cold gives a day its shape. You get up, the meadow may be frosted, and the light comes late at 8,200 feet. You put on more layers than you did yesterday.

There's the sauna, the spring-fed cold plunge and the hot tub, and in November the walk between them is its own event. Steam, frost or snow underfoot, cold air, then heat again. There's the Forest Spiral, a walking meditation path, which takes as long as you decide to take. There are trails, ponds, the river, and aspen groves that look entirely different without their leaves, all pale trunks and clean lines against grey or blue sky.

Then there's the mercantile, and the fire in the lodge, which in November is where you'll want to be in the late afternoon when it's already getting dark. You can sit near it with a book and say nothing to anyone. You can also end up in a long conversation with a stranger.

Is Beyul a good place to write or make something?

It suits that kind of trip. A cabin, a window and no internet is a decent working arrangement for a writer or anyone trying to finish a draft of something, and a day with no scheduled obligations is the rest of the equipment. The lodge rooms give you the same quiet with a connection, which matters if your project involves research, uploads or a client who needs to find you.

Long stays are available through May, so if the work needs weeks rather than a weekend, that's a conversation worth having when you book.

What about meals when you're here on your own?

Every cabin has a kitchenette or a full kitchen, and each cabin's setup is shown when you book. The lodge rooms and the Snug cabins share a communal kitchen in the main lodge. On an individual stay in a cabin or a lodge room, you cook your own meals, apart from our culinary weeks, which run in high season. Hot food matters more when it's cold outside.

If you're coming with others rather than alone, our meal arrangements shift with the season. From June 1 to November 1, farm-to-table meals are provided by our team and purchased for every guest staying onsite. From November 2 to May 31, groups of 6 or more can arrange meals through us or cook their own. This winter our chef is staying nearby and offers meal packages to suit different group styles, so ask about them when you book. Sometimes we have special menus and private chef experiences available too. Our chefs cook with organic, local, seasonal and sustainable ingredients, accommodate all food allergies and preferences, and use the best animal proteins available.

What should you bring for a November stay?

More warm layers than the forecast suggests. At 8,200 feet it pays to carry more than you think you'll need, and the difference between a pleasant afternoon walk and a cold one is usually a hat and a second pair of socks.

Boots with grip, for frost and early snow on the trails. Something to swim in, or not, for the hot tub and cold plunge. Books, notebooks, whatever you actually want to do with unstructured hours, because you will have them. Any medication you need, since Basalt is 45 minutes away. And water, more than you think, since you're at altitude.

How do you get to Beyul?

Basalt is 45 minutes away and Aspen is an hour. In November, check conditions before you set out and give yourself daylight if you can, since the light goes early and the drive is prettier when you can see it.
